On 19 August 1944, the French Résistance began an armed uprising against the German occupation forces in Paris – the opening phase of the city’s liberation, which was to last until 25 August. In parallel, Allied forces under General Eisenhower advanced on Paris; the Free French forces under General Leclerc led the assault. Jack Lieb documented this phase in color as one of only a few cameramen, while comparable footage of the same events has survived almost exclusively in black and white. The liberation of Paris marked a symbolic turning point in the 1944 Western campaign.
