The photograph shows the Hindenburg in the final phase of the disaster of May 6, 1937: the airship has already come down on the grounds of the Naval Air Station Lakehurst and stands fully engulfed in flames. Within less than a minute, the fire had consumed the entire hydrogen-filled fuselage; the exposed aluminum framework is all that withstands the fire. In the disaster, 36 of the 97 people on board and on the ground lost their lives; the event sealed the end of commercial passenger airship service.
