On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during the mooring maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within minutes. The photograph shows the airship at an advanced stage of the fire, while the burning framework descends to the ground. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The event was captured by several newsreel cameras and marked the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
