On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst and burned out within seconds. This photograph documents the disaster phase: the hydrogen-filled airship is in descent, enveloped in fire and smoke. Of the 97 people on board, 36 perished. The event marked the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
