The photograph from May 6, 1937 shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) during its passage over New York City – a customary route on transatlantic North America flights that also served promotional purposes. A few hours later, during the mooring maneuver at the naval base in Lakehurst, New Jersey, the airship caught fire and burned completely in just under a minute. 36 of the 97 people on board perished. This final scheduled passage over New York thus marks the closing hours of commercial passenger airship service.
