The still image shows the LZ 129 Hindenburg on the final leg of its transatlantic crossing in May 1937, still intact in flight over the coastal region near New York City. The passage over the metropolis was part of the standard flight plan before the mooring maneuver at the naval base in Lakehurst, New Jersey. A few hours after this photograph was taken, the airship caught fire while docking at the mooring mast: it ignited and burned completely in a very short time. 36 of the 97 people on board lost their lives.
