The photograph shows the Hindenburg in the final phase of its transatlantic flight, several hours before the disaster. The passage over New York City was part of the Hindenburg’s usual route on North American flights; subsequently, the airship continued its course to Lakehurst, where it caught fire during the landing maneuver. It was the last Atlantic crossing of the LZ 129.
