The overflight of New York City was part of the final leg of the Hindenburg’s transatlantic crossing on May 6, 1937, before the airship headed toward its destination at Lakehurst, New Jersey. Such overflights above Manhattan were a familiar sight at that time and were regarded as a symbol of modern aviation. A few hours after this photograph was taken, the Hindenburg met with disaster during its mooring maneuver at Lakehurst; 36 of the 97 people on board perished.
