During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany (June 23–26, 1963), Chancellor Konrad Adenauer appeared publicly at the podium. Adenauer accompanied Kennedy during major stages of the journey, which took place against the background of the Cold War and the construction of the wall in 1961. The visit served to reaffirm the transatlantic alliance and met with significant resonance among the West German population.
