As part of Kennedy’s visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, Chancellor Konrad Adenauer appeared publicly as host. Adenauer accompanied Kennedy at several stops of the journey, which encompassed Cologne, Bonn, and other cities. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall erected in 1961, and served to reaffirm the Western alliance.
