During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy also inspected American armed forces stationed in Germany. The photograph shows such a troop parade, in which Kennedy emerges from an open official vehicle and is received by a large formation of uniformed U.S. Army soldiers. Such visits to NATO allies and U.S. troops stationed in Germany underscored, in the context of the Cold War, the United States’ commitment to the defense of Western Europe.
