In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled through several locations in the Federal Republic of Germany. The photograph shows a motorcade with open limousines and motorcycle-accompanied police escort, lined with densely packed, cheering spectators. Such scenes repeated themselves along the entire route of the visit and reflected the extraordinary enthusiasm of the West German population. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and was intended to affirm American solidarity with the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
