The Brandenburg Gate, framed by barbed wire in the foreground, illustrates the situation of West Berlin at the time of Kennedy’s visit on June 26, 1963. Since the construction of the Berlin Wall in August 1961, the gate had been inaccessible as an inner-city border crossing and stood symbolically for the division of the city. During his stay in West Berlin, Kennedy also visited the Brandenburg Gate, which the East German side had covered with red curtains for this occasion. The photograph documents the Cold War context in which Kennedy’s solidarity visit took place.
