In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows the typical procedure of a reception during this visit: police officers secure the route, while numerous press photographers from elevated positions document the proceedings. Kennedy’s visit was a central event of the Cold War and served to reaffirm American solidarity with the Federal Republic and West Berlin, which since the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 had been particularly under pressure from the division of Germany.
