The aerial photograph shows the Brandenburg Gate in divided Berlin, taken on the occasion of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit on June 26, 1963. In the foreground, the course of the Berlin Wall is visible, which had divided West and East Berlin since 1961. The Brandenburg Gate lay directly at the sector boundary and was a central symbol of the Cold War. Kennedy inspected the Wall and the Brandenburg Gate as part of his Berlin visit, which reached its climax with the speech in front of the Schöneberg Town Hall.
