The aerial photograph shows Breitscheidplatz in West Berlin with the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church: the ruined tower destroyed in World War II stands next to the new building completed in 1961. The photograph was taken in the context of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, with the Berlin stage on June 26 forming the highlight. West Berlin was at this time a symbol of Western resistance during the Cold War; the Berlin Wall, erected in 1961, divided the city. Such aerial photographs served to document the cityscape and the visit program.
