During the Normandy invasion of 1944, Allied air superiority was a fundamental prerequisite for the success of the landing operations. The Allied air forces conducted intensive operations to counter the Luftwaffe as well as to support ground troops. Jack Lieb documented this phase as part of his color film material, which followed events from Normandy through Germany. Air combat footage of this type, whether filmed directly or as recorded documentary material, conveyed the character of aerial warfare over the invasion zone.
