In the spring and summer of 1944, Germany continued its bombing attacks on London, including from June 1944 the deployment of V1 flying bombs (Operation Steinbock and the subsequent V-weapons offensive). The footage shows rescue operations in a destroyed building and documents the civilian consequences of these attacks. Jack Lieb was in England in the period leading up to D-Day and integrated such images—here apparently black-and-white archival material—into his lecture film to illustrate the war context in the home front of the Allied forces. The scene appears in the film in the section on preparations in England (May 1944) and clarifies the situation of the British civilian population immediately before the invasion.
