Cherbourg was strategically indispensable as a deep-water port for Allied supply lines in Normandy. The German defenders capitulated in late June 1944, but had systematically demolished and rendered the port facilities unusable beforehand. The photograph shows the extensive destruction of the harbor infrastructure, which presented the Allies with considerable logistical challenges. Jack Lieb documented the scene as part of his color footage of the advance through Normandy.
