Cherbourg was the first strategically significant harbor objective for the Allies following the landing in Normandy; the city was captured at the end of June 1944. As an important deep-water port on the Cotentin Peninsula, Cherbourg was to secure the supply of Allied troops. Jack Lieb documented the city as part of his color film ‘D-Day to Germany’, which covers the phase after the landing at Utah Beach through the advance into the interior of Normandy.
