The photograph was taken on D-Day, June 6, 1944, at Utah Beach in Normandy and belongs to the landing phase in Lieb’s film. In the background, an LST (Landing Ship, Tank) can be seen running ashore — these flat-bottomed vessels were the backbone of Allied supply operations across the open coast. Half-track vehicles served US troops as versatile transport for infantry and equipment during the transition from water to land. Lieb’s 16-mm Kodachrome footage ranks among the few color documents of these landing operations.
