The photograph was taken during the Allied landing in Normandy (Operation Overlord) on June 6, 1944, presumably at Utah Beach, where Jack Lieb came ashore with a sea-based element of the 82nd Airborne Division. It shows the immediate supply and deployment operations on the beach: half-track vehicles and other military vehicles were brought to the coast by landing craft in the first hours and days after the landing to secure the beachhead and prepare for the advance into the interior. Lieb’s 16-mm Kodachrome footage is a rare color document of an event that is otherwise preserved almost exclusively in black and white.
