This photograph was taken during the Allied landing operation in Normandy on June 6, 1944 at Utah Beach. Jack Lieb came ashore with a sea-based element of the 82nd Airborne Division and documented the movement of armored vehicles from the beach into the hinterland — a phase in which securing the beachhead and rapid supply across the landing zone were decisive. The half-track vehicle was among the most important motorized troop transport and support vehicles of the U.S. armed forces and was deployed on all Allied fronts. Lieb’s Kodachrome material shows these scenes in color, whereas comparable photographs of the same event have been preserved almost exclusively in black and white.
