The photograph was taken during the Allied landing in Normandy on June 6, 1944 and shows the moment of arrival at Utah Beach. Jack Lieb came ashore with a seaborne element of the 82nd Airborne Division and documented the landing as one of the few cameramen to record it in color. Utah Beach was the westernmost of the American landing sectors; casualties there were lower in comparison to Omaha Beach, yet the logistical effort—bringing thousands of soldiers and vehicles ashore in the shortest time—was enormous. The image stands in the film sequence at the transition from the crossing to the first phase of the advance into the Normandy hinterland.
