This still shows the landing phase of Operation Overlord at Utah Beach in June 1944. Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs) of the US Navy have opened their bow ramps and are unloading vehicles and troops directly onto the beach—a transportation method crucial for supply that first made the rapid establishment of the beachhead possible. In the background, the extensive invasion fleet off the coast is visible. Jack Lieb filmed this scene with his private 16mm Kodachrome camera; the footage thus belongs among the rare color documents of the Normandy landing.
