The photograph was taken during the Allied landing in Normandy on June 6, 1944, and belongs to Jack Lieb’s unique color film material from Utah Beach. In the background, a beached landing ship (LST) is visible, which brought troops and materiel ashore – a central instrument of the large-scale amphibious operation Operation Overlord. Half-track vehicles served the U.S. Army as versatile troop transports and were deployed immediately after the landing during the establishment phase of the beachhead. Lieb’s Kodachrome photographs are among the few color documentations of this historical event.
