This photograph belongs to the landing sequence in Lieb’s film and shows the immediate beach section of Utah Beach in Normandy on D-Day. Landing ships of the LST type unloaded vehicles, equipment, and troops directly onto the beach — a core logistical operation of Operation Overlord. Lieb came ashore with an element of the 82nd Airborne Division and documented the landing procedure in rare color footage, while nearly all other contemporaneous photographs of this event are preserved in black and white.
