On August 19, 1944, while fighting for Paris was still ongoing, Charles de Gaulle arrived in the city as leader of the Free French Forces. His presence symbolized the restoration of French sovereignty after four years of German occupation. The scene belongs to the liberation phase in Lieb’s film, which documents the Allied advance from Normandy to the French capital. Lieb’s 16mm Kodachrome footage is one of the few color records of this historic moment.
