In August 1944, Allied forces—including US units and the French 2nd Armored Division—entered Paris as part of the operation to liberate France. German occupation troops capitulated on August 25, 1944; the population received the marching soldiers with great jubilation. Jack Lieb documented this moment in color as one of the few cameramen to do so, while comparable footage of the same event has been preserved almost exclusively in black and white. The liberation of Paris marked a decisive turning point in the Allies’ Western campaign following D-Day in Normandy.
