In August 1944, Allied forces, including American and Free French units, advanced on Paris. The footage from August 19, 1944 was captured at the beginning of the liberation phase, before the formal entry into the city on August 25 and the end of German occupation. The Paris population, which had lived under German occupation since June 1940, received the soldiers with open enthusiasm. Jack Lieb’s color film is among the rare contemporary color documents of this historic event.
