The Arc de Triomphe at Place de l’Étoile was one of the most symbolic sites of the liberation of Paris in August 1944. On August 25, 1944, nearly four years of German occupation of the French capital came to an end; Allied forces and units of the Free French forces entered the city. Jack Lieb captured this moment in color as one of the few cameramen to do so, while most contemporary documentation survives only in black and white. The footage appears in the film section on the liberation of Paris, which follows the advance through the Normandy hinterland and over Versailles.
