On its way to its destination Lakehurst, New Jersey, the airship LZ 129 Hindenburg passed over New York City on May 6, 1937. This overflight was part of the regular operations of the North Atlantic route of the German Zeppelin Company and was recorded by newsreel cameras. A few hours later, during the mooring maneuver at the naval base Lakehurst, the airship caught fire and was completely destroyed in a very short time.
