On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire while mooring at the mooring mast of Naval Air Station Lakehurst. The fire spread across the entire hydrogen-filled hull within seconds; the airship sank to the ground in flames. The photograph documents the immediate moment of the fire, in which the airship’s lettering is still visible. 36 of the 97 people on board and on the ground perished.
