On May 6, 1937, the LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during landing in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within seconds. This photograph documents the immediate onset or early phase of the fire, as the airship’s envelope was already burning, though the lettering remained visible. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The disaster marked the end of the era of manned passenger rigid airships.
