On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver at the naval base at Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned out within seconds. This photograph documents the moment of the crash, in which the still partially recognizable airship sank burning to the ground. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The event was captured by several newsreel cameras and marks the end of the era of passenger rigid airship travel.
