On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver at the naval base in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within seconds. The photograph shows the immediate phase of the disaster: the burning airship descends onto the landing field while ground personnel are in the vicinity. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The event is regarded as the end of commercial passenger airship service.
