On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and crashed to the ground within seconds. The photograph documents the immediate phase of the disaster: the airship descends in flames onto the field while ground personnel respond. 36 people perished in the accident. The film records of this disaster are considered a turning point in the history of commercial passenger airship aviation.
