After the fire and crash of the Hindenburg in Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937, rescue personnel immediately began emergency medical care for the survivors. The injured were treated on the grounds of the naval air station before being transported to hospitals. Of the 97 people on board, 61 survived the disaster, many of them with severe injuries.
