After the fire on May 6, 1937, the completely charred skeleton of LZ 129 Hindenburg remained on the grounds of Naval Air Station Lakehurst. The aluminum framework of what had once been the world’s largest airship was destroyed within minutes. The inspection of the wreckage was among the immediate measures taken following the disaster, in which 36 people lost their lives. Images of the debris circulated worldwide and sealed the end of commercial rigid airship travel.
