After the fire of May 6, 1937, the largely destroyed aluminum skeleton of the LZ 129 Hindenburg remained on the grounds of the Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. The debris phase documents the condition of the wreckage immediately following the disaster and formed the basis for subsequent investigations into the cause of the fire. The event, in which 36 people perished, marked the end of commercial rigid airship service.
