On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its docking maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within seconds. The image shows the airship in the phase of burning descent — that moment in which the fuselage is already engulfed in fire and the wreckage descends to the ground. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The disaster, captured by several film cameras, is regarded as the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
