On May 6, 1937, the hydrogen-filled airship LZ 129 Hindenburg ignited during the docking maneuver at the mooring mast of Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. Within seconds, fire engulfed the entire envelope; the airship sank burning to the ground. The still image documents the immediate crash phase, in which the aluminum framework becomes visible and the wreckage strikes the ground.
