On May 6, 1937, the LZ 129 Hindenburg burned during the mooring maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and was completely consumed within ten seconds, sinking to the ground. The still image shows the metal frame of the airship, still engulfed in flames — the phase immediately following impact, before rescue personnel reached the wreckage. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The disaster ended the era of commercial passenger rigid airship travel.
