On May 6, 1937, the LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its landing maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and sank to the ground in flames within seconds. The still image shows the wreckage in the immediate phase after impact: the aluminum framework of the airship has collapsed on the ground, while the fire continues. Rescue personnel and witnesses approach the site of the disaster. The catastrophe claimed 36 lives and marked the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
