On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its landing maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within minutes. The image shows the immediate phase of the disaster: the wreckage lies on the ground while rescue personnel and fire brigades reach the site of the accident. 36 of the 97 people on board lost their lives. The footage, documented by several film cameras, ranks among the most widely viewed records of aviation history and marks the end of commercial passenger airship service.
