On May 6, 1937, the LZ 129 Hindenburg burned completely during its landing maneuver in Lakehurst in less than one minute. The image shows the phase immediately after the crash: the aluminum framework of the airship lies burning on the ground while persons—presumably emergency personnel and eyewitnesses—enter the site. 36 people lost their lives in the disaster; the event marked the end of commercial passenger airship service.
