After the LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its approach to the mooring mast in Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937, the airship fell to the ground within seconds. The still image shows the immediate aftermath: the metal framework of the Zeppelin lies burning on the ground, dense smoke rises, while emergency personnel enter the area. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives; the disaster marked the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
