After the LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during the landing maneuver at the Lakehurst naval base and burned out within seconds, the exposed aluminum framework remained as wreckage on the ground. Rescue forces approached the still-burning debris field to recover survivors. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The disaster of May 6, 1937 marked the end of commercial passenger airship service.
