After LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire on May 6, 1937 during the mooring maneuver at Lakehurst, New Jersey, and sank to the ground within minutes, this photograph shows the phase immediately following the crash. The exposed aluminum framework of the airship lies on the ground; smoke still rises as the first persons enter the site. 36 people perished in the disaster, which marked the end of commercial passenger airship service.
