On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire within seconds during the mooring maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst. The hydrogen-filled airship burned completely and sank to the ground; 36 of the 97 people on board perished. The photograph documents this central phase of the disaster, which was captured by several newsreel cameras and marked the end of passenger airship travel.
